Sponsor Licence ProblemsThat Could Put Your Licence at Risk
Most compliance issues are avoidable process failures, not deliberate wrongdoing. Here are the patterns we see most often.
Failing to report an unauthorised absence of more than 10 consecutive working days within the required window
Failing to report salary reductions, or changes to a worker's job role, title, or location
Incomplete record-keeping under Appendix D — missing payslips, contracts, or right to work evidence
Employing sponsored workers without properly conducted right to work checks
Sponsoring a role that isn't genuinely eligible — for example, one that doesn't meet the skill or salary threshold, or doesn't reflect a genuine vacancy
Workers actually performing duties that don't match the occupation code or job description on their Certificate of Sponsorship
Wider non-compliance with UK employment law or sector regulatory requirements

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a compliance visit take, and do we get advance warning?
Visits can be announced or unannounced, and can happen in person or digitally. GOV.UK doesn't publish a fixed duration — it depends on the size of your organisation and the scope of the check.
What happens to our sponsored employees if our licence is suspended, not revoked?
While suspended, you cannot assign new Certificates of Sponsorship and the licence is removed from the public register — but existing sponsored workers generally keep their valid permission unless the case later moves to revocation.
Can we sponsor ourselves as the sole director of our own company?
There's no blanket legal bar to a limited company sponsoring its own director for a genuine, appropriately paid, appropriately skilled role — but this attracts closer Home Office scrutiny of whether the company and the vacancy are genuine, especially for very small or single-director companies. GOV.UK doesn't use the term "self-sponsorship"; the relevant official test is the genuine role requirement.
Can a sole trader sponsor themselves?
Sole traders can hold a sponsor licence for their business, but because a sole trader isn't legally separate from the individual, self-sponsorship in the company-sponsors-its-director sense generally isn't workable for a sole trader. Most arrangements use a limited company instead.
